Nikhil Sharma, Art Director, Toni&Guy, North India  says “At Toni&Guy, we treat color as a science. It’s the understanding of light and tones which make all the difference. Dark colors can make an area look smaller and light shades can open up and widen a space, if you can create illusions to flatter your face shape with makeup, then why not in your hair.”

Hair contouring is the cleverest way to enhance your face shape. Hair contouring is the science behind the placement of color in the hair, with which we can enhance ones face shape.

OVAL FACE SHAPE

The oval face shape is the most desirable because it’s very versatile. Most of the coloring techniques can be used on this face shape, but it’s recommended to talk to your colorist about the tones of the color to add depth, texture or shine which will enhance your features.

ROUND FACE SHAPE

For this face shape we need to add an illusion of length to the face. Think about creating brightness at the top and adding depth to the end to create more of a point to your face. Lighter tones of colour should be applied around the hairline, while darker or richer tones are applied to the hair underneath the ears and the lower ends of the hair around the face.

OBLONG FACE SHAPE

You want to create the illusion of cutting off the face to slim and shorten the shape. Apply deeper tones to the roots along the parting, merging into delicate lighter pieces from above the ears to the ends of the hair. The deeper tones will help flatten the face and make the face look more oval.

SQUARE FACE SHAPE

The trick is to soften hard lines. Multi-tonal layers of light and dark are applied to all corners of the face shape, around the jawline and around the temples. This technique of coloring will soften the hard lines as multi-tonal layers will create more softness around the face.

HEART FACE SHAPE

To create a more oval face shape you want lighter pieces woven around the jawline and ears. This softens the lower part of the face and fine light tones with depth at the roots. Whatever your face shape you also need to take into account the color tone. The wrong color can make the right technique disastrous. You should ask your stylist as to which tone would suit your skin color, warm or cool tone.

For people with cooler toned skin, chocolate browns, creamy blondes or orangey reds are best suited. For warmer skin tones chestnut browns, honey blondes and coppery reds are best suited. The right tone of colour and placement can brighten your complexion and balance your face shape.
