Men’s grooming is growing in a big way with more and more Men now adapting various procedures for skin care.
One would think that a smooth hairless skin is the prerogative of women. If current trends are to go by, this perception seems to belong to a lifestyle of the past. For, it has now become a style statement amongst men to sport the chocolate boy look; smooth hair free skin, almost effeminate or should we say, the new masculine look, going by current inclinations of the male fraternity. What is more interesting to note is the comfort men are displaying in talking about this manscaping.
Cosmetic permanent removal of unwanted hair has become the latest fashion amongst men, be it the chest, back, shaping the beard or even the genital area. Men increasingly are looking at ways to remove or reduce body hair and the options sought for such removal are non-invasive, chemical free, long lasting solutions. Most of course do not want the removal to be total yet are looking at ways to thin its presence and laser hair reduction is a popular way sought to achieve this.
Laser hair reduction process involves emitting a light at a specific wavelength which is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding skin. The heat energy from this emitted light destroys the hair follicle. The treatment causes mild heat sensation, but it is mild enough to be tolerated. Ice packs and cooling gels reduce this mild discomfort.
The duration of the treatment is dependent on the area to be treated. For instance, if the area requiring hair reduction is the upper lip, the treatment would last 5-10 minutes while the legs and back, given the larger quantum of hair, would last over an hour or hour and a half. The treatment sessions need to be repeated every month, lasting 6 to 8 sittings to bring in the hair reduction of about 70 to 90 per cent. Maintenance of the same is based on individual responses.
The hair removal areas invariably pertain to back, chest, stomach and shoulders and to some extent shaping the beard. Lately removal of hair over the genitals has come into vogue both for hygiene as well as cosmetic reasons. In fact, permanent hair reduction has shown positive results in healing a medical condition called pilonidal sinus which is a chronic recurrent disease of natal cleft.
Without doubt laser hair removal is a safe effective method bringing in permanent hair reduction as compared to shaving, waxing or even tweezing. There are some mild temporary reactions immediately post the treatment such as mild itching, redness, heat sensation and in some rare cases swelling. But these last just for a few minutes or at the most a few hours.
Inappropriate settings in the treatment process can however result in unwanted side effects such as colour change or burning of skin. It is to be noted that this process is permanent hair reduction and not hair removal, where 70 to 90 per cent reduction can be achieved after a series of 6 to 8 sessions.
